    Artist Statement

"When a house was built in Zanzibar, the door was traditionally the first part to be erected. Wealthy traders and house owners appointed skilled carvers brought in from India for the delicate job of arranging the entrance ornament. Their creativity is continuously on display. The greater the wealth and social position of the owner of the house, the door was larger and more elaborately carved. Many of the doors are a work of art, and making them is a skilled trade passed down from generation to generation even today.

"In my walks in Zanzibar's Stone Town I was fascinated by these doors that still looked beautiful even in their run down state today. When I came upon this door with the little girl, I was able to get some of the interior of the house. Most other doors were closed."
