      "When first seen from across the room, this 'canvas' reads as bold, expressionist stripes. Walk a bit closer and subtler colors and textures come into view, like mixed paints on a palette. Move closer yet…and suddenly it’s 'railroad tracks from above.' So what’s the 'real' subject and what’s an abstraction? And how, really, can a traditional photograph be abstract at all? Maybe it’s a matter of altering scale and of stripping context until a new world is found. To me, the cool thing here is that all of these views are 'real' and that this image works from all of those distances. The viewers get to choose."

    Artist Statement

    "Marks on the Land – the view from here, is a continuing theme or structure in this work – from by-ways to the designed and found landscapes of the formal and informal gardens and special spaces of the world. This photograph was created from a helicopter over the abandoned landscapes of Middle America. This Chicago rail yard view near the Midway Airport is extracted from its context producing the concept for this abstract expressionistic photograph. The central orange rust draws the viewer’s attention and is the unifying element.

    "It is the relationship between Lamb’s photographs and abstract painting that is perhaps the most direct association for the viewer and one that he emphasizes in his visual compositions. Lamb achieves abstraction by pulling back and showing us bigger swatches of land, in color, from the top down. The lines, patterns, and gestures in these landscapes – call to mind the abstract canvases of painters as varied as Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman and Cy Twombly."
