"I was at the local primary school in Sendui village in the Ngorongoro region of Africa. It is hard not to be compassionate when you hear the stories of those children. While the children were at school, I spoke to a cook whose kitchen is in an unusually dark space where he cooks the usual meal of corn soup. Suddenly I heard a strange noise and I ran out of the kitchen just to see the crowd. There were about 300 pupils who were pushing each other and trying to be the first ones to taste their everyday meal. The corn soup is their usual lunch which is included in an annual scholarship. Children in Africa do not bring lunch with them because they usually have nothing to bring. To some of them a corn soup is the only meal they will have that day.

"During the lunch break children are usually guarded by their teacher. Children tend to push each other struggling to get their meal because a hungry belly does not recognize politeness. Thus, their teachers usually have a stick; they yell at children and send them back to the line.

"I breathed in to gather my emotions before I started taking pictures. I set the aperture and I did not do any other adjustments because I did not want to lose the moment I wanted to capture. There was a completely different kind of energy to what I was used to -- they usually act curiously and excitingly when they see a white man and his camera. However, this time they were focused on food and they did not pay much attention to me. After the meal, children came to me and they were thrilled to see their own image in the camera screen."
