      Juror's Comment

      From Scott Atkinson:
"It’s intriguing how this photo seems minimal yet packs emotion. It’s like the first warm glow of daylight from beyond those cooler rectangles and reflections, a glow from somewhere you haven’t been before. I love the rich gradations of blues and golds, the subtly stippled textures, and the faint trace of what looks like a window shade’s pull-string."

    Artist Statement

"This work is 1/3 inspiration, 1/3 editing-retouching, and 1/3 dumb luck. First, while trying out my new Nikon D700, I took a casual photograph of some mat board backgrounds hung on the wall. Auspicious sunlight through the window added shadows to the simple 90 degree angles, and suddenly I was seeing the ineffable, definitive minimalism of a Piet Mondrian painting. Desperately in need of inspiration for the Kellicutt theme, I thought of adding the graduated colors to suggest the feeling of hopefulness, —and voilà!

"May the result speak for itself."
