      Juror's Comment

      From Stephen Chalmers:

This image, showing a Correfocs, nicely illustrates the exhibition theme of "Energy, Strength, and Power." The formal qualities of the image drew the jurors attention. The young man framed by the torches of the celebrants in the left side of the depiction of a Catalan festival created what the jurors felt was the ultimate depiction of energy.

      From Janet Jones:

The image is intrinsically exciting, with its orange ball of flame against the darkness. The drama is reinforced by the centerward thrust of the poles and the excitement of the crowd. The red of the men’s head scarves repeats the red of the poles, and lends a medieval flavor to the scene.

      From Stephen Johnson:

Human play caught in flame burst, a magical shot

    Artist Statement

The photograph was taken in the Fire Celebrations of the Barcelona Mercè, saint patron of the city.

Thousands of hell fires are in the city streets for several hours. It seemed unusual, big fakir torches lit with fire, given the hazards involved.

I just had to follow the boy and take the picture.

The picture was taken in raw form, 12 megapixels, and subsequently treated in photoshop.
