I am drawn to structural and pattern subjects for my photography. I have many examples of architectural and other man-made structures and environments that I have photographed. But I also make many photos of structure and patterns in nature.

This image was captured in Sequoia National Park in the late winter of 2006. Most people taking pictures in Sequoia are backing up, trying to fit the tall, splendid trees into their viewfinders. I have taken my fair share of those pictures too. But in this case, I noticed the layers of trees receding into the distance: A fir, a sequoia, and a background of evergreen. But the best element was the dead fir branch, cutting across the image, decorated with lichen.

In a place famous for its long shots, I found an interesting and compelling close-up.
