• About the juror

    Since making Cairns Australia home a few decades ago Brian has been freelancing for National and International media including News Ltd, Fairfax Press and 'The Wires' (Associated Press etc).

    Brian covered tsunamis in Asia (Banda Aceh Indonesia, Phuket and Khoa Lak Thailand, Myanmar 2004/5) and the Pacific (Sissano Papua New Guinea 1998), the evacuation of refugees from East Timor (1999), George Speights coup in Fiji and the World Economic Forum riots in Melbourne (2000), the victims of the 2002 Bali terrorist bombs and the devastation wrought in Australia by category 5 cyclone's Larry (2006) and Yasi (2011).

    Brian was selected as one of three finalists in the recent 2013 “Nikon Walkley Australian Press Photographer of the Year Award” and also won two previous Walkley Awards in 2005 and 2011.Also in 2013, Brian was selected as a Winner of the prestigious “Head On Portrait Prize”  - and in 2012 one of his portrait images won a National Press Photographers Association  “Best of Photojournalism” award, Brian has also won several Queensland Clarion media awards, won the "Australian Sports Photo of the Year" in 1985 and has achieved recognition in the Moran, Head On, Hurley, Rothmans and Gordon Parkes photo awards. In 2010 Brian was selected by peers in the "Top Ten" of "Australia's Top Photographers" in both the Photojournalism and Editorial categories.

    Brian won first and third prizes in the Kellicutt International “Vibrant” in 2012.
