      Juror's Comment

      From Crista Dix:

"I float within this photograph, rock back and forth. The movement and flow of the pair of images creates an elongated sense of belonging, of being part of the water."

    Artist Statement

"The romantics believed that seafaring gave you a sense of nearing the eternal; it was the closest to the sublime you could experience. At sea, with no reference points, floating on a liquid medium, all sense of reality as we know it on land is lost."

Ten years ago, Kristianne sailed across the Pacific Ocean and during her 27 days at sea, sailed through the Intertropical Convergence Zone where the northeast and southeast trade winds come together. Kristianne's cinematic diptychs capture the feeling of her experience in the Pacific Ocean. Her images are meant to recreate her experience but were created just yards off the beach near her home. With no reference to scale, the color and texture of the water assumes the character of water in the middle of the open ocean. Her images express a connection between being on the ocean away from land and familiar attributes of life and being in an unworldly place.
