      "I didn't realize when I initially chose this shot as finalist and then as a prize winner that Half Moon Bay was the home of Mavericks. I confess to be a lifelong admirer of surfing, even though I have only actually surfed a few times. So, I was initially drawn to the picture by my personal interests, but even more so by the great composition, the intimacy of the scene, and its unique perspective. I see lots of big wave shots, but this one is really different and I applaud the photographer for that and the great execution of the image under tough and dangerous conditions."

    "Having spent most of my life in California, I have been exposed to the incredible athleticism and sheer beauty of the sport of surfing for many years. The technology of digital photography has recently made it possible for me to capture some of those sublime moments of interaction between a human and the awesome power of the ocean, and for that I will be forever grateful.
