    Artist Statement

"I got the idea for this image while sitting in a café eating a slice of cake with a clear plastic fork. I remembered seeing a black and white photo of a steel fork resting on a ceramic plate, taken by the renowned Hungarian photographer, André Kertész. Could I create my own image, using modern plastic materials? I experimented with various plastic utensils, plates and cups. Under certain conditions, light passing through some transparent plastics is split into two rays which travel at different speeds. The two rays interfere, producing colorful patterns which are revealed by using polarized light and a polarizing filter. So, the vibrancy of the image you see here comes from the interfering vibrations of light waves."
