I came upon the log canoe “Mystery” while she was participating in a race on the Miles River near St. Michaels, Maryland. Built in 1932, she is one of fewer than 20 log canoes remaining and still racing. Notice how the largest members of the crew balance the force of the wind in the sails by precariously hanging on the ‘spring boards’ to hopefully prevent capsizing. The challenge of repositioning all this human ballast when tacking can be quite entertaining.

I took this picture with a 35mm Canon 1D using the 70-200 IS lens from my 300 hp. Stearman open cockpit biplane that was built in 1942.

The negative was digitized using the Nikon 8000 film scanner, then cleaned up and cropped in PS7.
