    Artist Statement

The Pu’u O’o Vent was formed from the 1983 to 1986 phase of the Kilauea Volcano eruption on the Island of Hawaii, commonly known as the Big Island. Pu’u O’o means hill of the O’o bird.

I was coerced into taking a helicopter trip by a photographer friend of mine, after saying that I would never ride a helicopter unless it was life or death. I don’t know what got into me….I went on the ride anyway. And, the shot was well worth it. Would I go again? Not likely--I was terrified.

The active volcanic island that I live on is awesome and powerful. Our island landscape and shape has not stopped changing since the 1980’s! The energy and strength of our world is truly magnificent. Or as local legend states, Madam Pele is truly fierce.

The shot was taken with a 10-22mm Sigma on my Canon Rebel XT.
