The volcano Ijen is situated on the Island of Java, Indonesia. Two to three times everyday, a group of men walk up a steep and winding three-kilometer dirt path to the top of the volcano’s caldera and descend to the bottom of the crater to collect sulfur rocks.

They then carry their heavy loads, weighing between 60 to 90 kilos (130 to 200 pounds) back up to a weighing station. Heavy breathing and coughing of the sulfur carriers who work amidst poisonous sulfuric clouds break up the silence of this desolate and somewhat surreal place.

This photograph is part of a series of stills and video images that will be mixed together to create a short film on the workers of Indonesia. The project is supported by the : Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts.
