Evening, late December, just outside the Cosumnes River Preserve in California. An endless flock of red-winged blackbirds explode from the marsh, hurling their bodies skyward in alarm at a passing hawk. They trill, squawk and call, a staccato code used in the bush when enemies are near. After the danger passes, the birds settle back on bulrush and tule as the sun leaves again from the Valley winter sky.
